About:

Sven Schmitz is an associate professor of aerospace engineering at Penn State University. He has a Dipl.Ing. in aerospace engineering from RWTH Aachen (Germany) and a Ph.D. in mechanical and aeronautical engineering from the University of California, Davis. He leads graduate and postdoctoral researchers in fundamental computational and experimental investigations on rotary wing aerodynamics, with a major focus on rotorcraft aeromechanics, rotor/blade design methodologies, rotor active control, rotor hub flows, and large-eddy simulations of wind turbine wakes and ship airwakes and their interaction with atmospheric turbulence. At present, he is one of the primary rotor design engineers for NASA’s ‘Dragonfly’ mission, an X-8 octocopter lander to explore Titan’s chemistry and habitability, and he is very active in the emerging field of planetary rotorcraft. He is also the recipient of a Penn State Engineering Alumni Association Outstanding & Premier Teaching Awards and the Joseph L. Steger Fellowship Award for exemplary research in computational fluid dynamics
